What Is Meditation?

 

Before talking about the benefits of meditation, it is important to understand what it actually is. Meditation is a practice that uses different techniques to bring mindful awareness to one’s self. In order to fully captivate the effects of mediation it is important to know which type is most beneficial for you. With so many different techniques it can be overwhelming just starting, but with some patience and a few deep breaths anyone can easily begin the practice of meditation.

Types of Meditation

 

Find which type is most beneficial to you. This is just a short list of the most popular types of mediation:

Mindfulness Meditation – This is perhaps the most commonly known type of meditation and the base of many techniques. Mindfulness is about becoming and remaining aware of the situation you are in, exactly how it is. Note what is happening all around you – the smells, sounds, and sights without judgment. This can lead to greater perception of situations and emotional intelligence.

Breath Awareness Meditation – This is a type of mindfulness meditation that gives focus to breathing rather than your surroundings. Keep a rhythm in your breath while ignoring any other thought that arises. This can create a deep peace and protectiveness within yourself.

Zen Meditation – Zen Meditation closely resembles Mindfulness Meditation but includes specific steps and posture. Zen requires practice and discipline to master both the observation of judgment free thought and steps to reach it. Rather than offering temporary calming solutions, Zen looks deep into core problems and how to fully understand what that is and how to overcome it in yourself.

Metta Meditation (Loving Kindness) – The primary focus of Metta Meditation is to feel a complete sense of compassion to yourself, others, and your surroundings. This is accomplished through breathing deeply and repeating a mantra that promotes love and kindness.

Progressive Relaxation (Body Scan) – Scan every part of your body to realize where you are holding in tension and slowly allow yourself to release it. This type of meditation is used to promote calmness and relaxation.

The over arching benefit of meditation is to offer insight, understanding, and peace. It is common to feel calmer, peaceful, and more accepting while meditating. Overtime, those feelings will often come into daily life, outside of mediation. You will be able to look at yourself and others with new insight and respect. The process of meditation can be life-long, remember to enjoy the process rather than end results.
